Asia Museum of Modern Art (Asia Modern), the one and only university museum designed by Mr. Tadao Ando, held its grand opening on Oct. 24, inviting President Ying-Jeou Ma, Asia University (AU) founder Dr. Chang-Hai Tsai, Taichung Mayor Jason Hu, and the renowned architect Mr. Tadao Ando to the ceremony.

Asia Modern was designed by Mr. Tadao Ando, governed by six experts in the field of exposed concrete, and took 500 million and six-and-a-half years to complete. Mr. Ando revealed in his speech given at the ceremony that constructing a triangular structure like that of the museum is extremely difficult, but now he felt relieved after receiving President Ma’s compliment on the museum.

“Large-scale constructions can make a city grow bigger, but arts and culture can make a city become greater,” said President Ma after visiting Asia Modern. He believed that Asia Modern not only serves as a university museum, but also represents a landmark of the Taichung City, marking a significant milestone in the history of Taiwan.

President Ma, AU founder Dr. Tsai, Taichung Mayor Jason Hu, and Mr. Tadao Ando unveile the new university museum of art altogether.

Mr. Ando is a famous autodidact architect who won the 1995 Pritzker Prize in Architecture. “His perseverance and commitment in architecture is indeed the best inspiration for all the students,” said Ma, in the opening speech.

President Ma also admired AU Founder Tsai’s contribution and great vision in education. “His efforts and devotion in art and education have created positive impacts on the faculty and students of AU as well as the citizens of the Taichung City,” added Ma. It is believed, as mentioned by Ma, that AU will become one of the top universities in the world with one of the best college museums.

As mentioned in his speech, Founder Tsai expected that Asia Modern is not just a museum for exhibition, research, art appreciation, and education, but most importantly that Asia Modern should promote Taiwan to the world stage.

The opening exhibition of Asia Modern presents the Sculpture of Auguste Rodin, Armand Fernandez and Edgar Degas. In the near future, Asia Modern is planning to display works of Taiwanese young artists, providing a global platform for contemporary arts in Taiwan.
